At Benedict Academy, the intent of our MFL curriculum is to progressively develop pupils’ phonics, vocabulary and grammar knowledge, so that children can use this to produce more complex language. At the same, our curriculum provides a deeper understanding and appreciation for diverse cultures, fostering curiosity and broadening students' perspectives.
At Benedict Academy, we understand that the ability to communicate in multiple languages is an important skill. Learning a foreign language prepares children for future success in a globalized society and encourages them to think hard about the structure and complexities of their own native language.
By the end of year 6 at Benedict, pupils will be able to recount the building blocks of language acquisition: phonics, vocabulary and grammar. Pupils will be able to listen and speak in French, but also decode, read, and finally write sentences constructed using high-utility verbs and vocabulary.
Our curriculum is designed sequentially, with the aim to equip pupils with the ability to understand and respond to spoken and written language. In addition to this, it provides ample opportunities to revisit and practice pronunciation and vocabulary, allowing for the efficient embedding of knowledge in long-term memory.
We hope that our French curriculum lays for foundation for future language learning, and that children are prepared to specialise in a language at secondary school level.
