Our History curriculum intends for pupils to have a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain's past and that of the wider world, in accordance with the primary National Curriculum.
From EYFS to Year 6, pupils build their conceptual understanding of chronology while exploring a range of sources that demonstrate how Britain and the wider world have developed and changed over time. Over time, we work to develop their schema to include secure substantive knowledge, that can be retrieved quickly. This will inform them when engaging in historical inquiry based on disciplinary concepts within history. This knowledge is taught in units of history that relate back to core texts.
When discussing history, we ensure that pupils have a depth of understanding around vocabulary, and provide them with models and images that support with ongoing retrieval. For some new concepts we may pre-teach children vocabulary.
The aim of our Geography curriculum is that pupils gain a strong understanding geographical knowledge in the National Curriculum: including location, place, environmental knowledge, and geographical skills and fieldwork.
Alongside this, we appreciate the importance of teaching children to ‘think like a geographer’, so want pupils to have exposure to the disciplinary knowledge of how experts think. Pupils learn a range of geographical skills through including mapping and fieldwork studies. These skills, combined with succinct, progressive geographical knowledge, will help pupils to better understand the Earth and its features, inhabitants and phenomena.
To ensure that all pupils are able to access Geography effectively, we ensure that we adapt our images or models given. For example, for pupils with visual impairment, we will enlarge and alter the images for map work.
