We take a mastery approach to the teaching of mathematics. The fundamental principle is that there are high expectations for all children to reach the same high standard of mathematical proficiency, and that they are effectively supported to do so. Lessons gradually and strategically build on prior learning to develop depth of understanding.
Teachers focus on high quality instruction, work that is carefully sequenced and developing good subject knowledge. This supports pupils to articulate their understanding of mathematical concepts. Children progress through the learning at broadly the same pace and children who grasp concepts rapidly are challenged through rich and sophisticated problems. We believe that, through this approach, our children become automatic, efficient and flexible mathematicians.
We recognise that when working mathematically, children should be supported at whichever level they are at. Therefore, we use a range of carefully selected models and resources, including concrete and pictorial representations of number or the appropriate problems.
