Writing

Our primary aim when teaching writing from Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) to Year 6 is to develop students' ability to communicate effectively in written form, and to become technically fluent writers.

We ensure that they are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to spell words accurately and use correct punctuation, grammar, and sentence structure. Furthermore, all pupils at Benedict have daily handwriting sessions.

Pupils at Benedict Academy automise these processes before writing at length to free up cognitive load. From there, pupils are supported to write in a variety of genres and for different purposes, such as narrative, informative, and persuasive writing. Students receive personalised feedback on their individual drafts at the point of learning and use this feedback to inform subsequent redrafts. The cycle of drafting, responding to feedback and redrafting is repeated until children publish a piece of extended writing. All children are included in writing lessons, and lessons are scaffolded to ensure that all children can access the key learning.

The true assessment of a student’s writing ability comes later when teachers observe what knowledge and feedback has been retained and transferred into new, future writing outcomes.
